MONTEFALCO SANGRANTINO - DOC

The Sagrantino variety has been cultivated on the hillsides of Montefalco since time immemorial, probably introduced by monks as a wine for the celebration of the Catholic mass. The vines were cultivated from stock found primarily within the grounds of monasteries. The soil and climactic environment of Montefalco are most ideally suited to bring out the best of its productive and qualitative potential.

Cultivated using espalier, Guyot and buttressed Cordon systems, this variety produces grapes that ripen towards the end of September. The grapes are then harvested by hand and undergo a red vinification process. Lengthy steeping with the grape’s skins, which can last up to 30 days, is done in order to extract all the components that can best express the characteristics of this grape variety.

The wine that is produced is then put into steel vats and is subsequently placed into small French Bay-oak barriques to age for at least 20 months before it is stabilised and bottled. The wine is then bottle-aged for about eight months before being put on the market. Sagrantino has a deep ruby-red colour with blackish highlights that tend to mellow to a garnet colour with age.

It has a very intense bouquet and its typical blackberry, plum, and leathery overtones blend perfectly with the vanilla scent imparted by the wooden casks. A powerful and very complex wine. It is persistent in flavour and has a slightly bitter finish. Like all full-bodied wines, Sagrantino is the perfect foil for hearty roasted meat and game as well as for the most celebrated international dishes.

This wine has a very long life and it is a delight to uncork a 10/15-year-old bottle because here, all it’s aromatic complexity and balanced flavour are fully enhanced. Because of its structure, Sagrantino is best served at a temperature of 18/20°C and should be uncorked at least three hours before being served.

MONTEFALCO ROSSO - DOC

Our Montefalco rosso is produced from Sangiovese grapes, with a small percentage of Sagrantino and grapes from other important varieties from the area. After the grapes have been harvested by hand, they undergo the traditional red wine vinification process in the winery. Here the fermentation process takes place and the grape skins are steeped for a period that lasts from 10 to 15 days, depending on the year. During this period, the must is passed over the dregs twice a day in order to extract all the colour and aroma of the grape skins.

After the wine has been drawn off, it is kept in stainless steel vats for four months. At this point, it is transferred to Slovenian bay-oak barrels of various sizes for at least 18 months. Once the wine is removed from the barrels, it is stabilised and bottled and at this point it is left to age for six months before being put on the market. The Montefalco rosso has a bright ruby red colour and its intense bouquet has a ripe fruity scent reminiscent of plums, which blends with the scent of vanilla that comes from the wooden casks. A big and full-bodied wine, Montefalco rosso has a dry and very persistent after taste. Its roundness and balance have made it one of the most delightful discoveries on the Umbrian wine scene. It is best enjoyed at a temperature of around 18° and should be uncorked at least three hours before being served. It goes perfectly well with all red and white meats, as well as with cold cuts and sharp cheeses.

ALCOHOL CONTENT: 13°

COLOUR: Brilliant and intense ruby red

TASTE: Round, full bodied, dry and very persistent.

SAGRANTINO PASSITO - DOCG

According to documented historical evidence, the wine made from Sagrantino variety grapes was traditionally produced and enjoyed in the past as wine with a significant amount of residual sweetness rather than as a fully dry wine.

The Sagrantino grapes used today to produce this ‘passito’ dessert wine, which has revived these age-old traditions, are gathered when they are fully ripe. Then after each selection, they are placed on racks in well-ventilated rooms so that the bunches of grapes can dry out slowly and evenly. After two months, once the grapes have reached an ideal concentration of sugar, they undergo further selection and at this point, they are pressed and made into wine. The wine that is produced is put into small barrels for 18 to 20 months. After this, it is bottle-aged for another 6-7 months to improve it even further.

The intense ruby-red colour of Sagrantino Passito turns to a lovely garnet colour with ageing, whereas its heady bouquet offers a wealth of ripe fruity tones in which the scent of nuts and berries stands out. A sweet wine that is ideally suited for ageing, it is velvety to the palate and has an intriguing citrus and almond aftertaste. While it is excellent with the traditional pastries made in Umbria, it is also a delightful wine that is perfect for ‘contemplation’.
