A Villa in Taormina   With spectacular sea views on one side and shady terraced gardens on the other, this elegant turn-of-the-century hotel is one of our favourite places in Italy. Breakfast on the sunny terrace overlooking the sea is such a highlight that guests sometimes prefer not to move from here for the day. The hotel location is right down a flight of steps from the main pedestrian street in Taormina and near the sights, restaurants, shops and other attractions.

- A valuable local experience of Taormina one of Sicily's most beautiful towns

                               Taormina Walk                                                         B

We set out this morning on 3 hour loop walk leaving from the villa (210 meters above sea level) with breathtaking sea views and taking you into the countryside outside Taormina on a walk to Castelmola (550 metres). Points of interest on the way include Madonna della Rocca with it's scenic point overlooking Taormina, the Straits of Messina, the southern Ionian coastline and of course the ever-present Mount Etna. Castelmola is a delightful small medieval town with shops displaying Sicilian handicrafts and ceramics. There are coffee bars and restaurants in the town and lunch is included. We walk back along another scenic route via Porta Saracena. An extension to the return walk is possible with a walk up to Mount Venere (885 metres) which takes up to 4 hours / on request.

Wed
Mt  Etna                                                                   B D
A morning visit to Mount Etna, one of the world’s most active volcanoes and at over 3000m the highest point on the island. We are fortunate to have information provided by an enthusiastic Sicilian volcanologist who lives on the slopes.

The drive up takes us through picturesque villages and an ever changing landscape of vineyards, orange and lemon groves, Mediterranean flora and finally the barren moonscape of the craters at the top.

Thu                                 Small towns and Villages
 B D

A fascinating excursion into the area around Taormina, completely in contrast to the resort aspect of Taormina itself. The visits include a trip to the nearby village used in filming mafia sequences in the Godfather.

Fri                                   Siracusa                                                                 B L

Today we travel south to Siracusa, home to Archimedes and once a mega city of half a million people that was once the Mediterranean’s preeminent metropolis, now home to a wealth of archaeological remains .
We explore the old city of Ortigia including Piazza Duomo and the spectacular Baroque cathedral which was originally the city’s temple to Athena. There will be some free time to wander the labyrinthine streets of this UNESCO World Heritage site.

On the way home we visit the famed Greek theatre of Siracusa, home at one time to the Greek playwright Aeschylus
