Montefalco Sagrantino had its origins as a sweet wine to accompany mass, through its popularity as the peasant staple throughout the middle ages then its transformation by Caprai cellars in conjunction with Milan University into a dry best seller.

The itinerary includes daily visits to local vineyards and cellars with tastings of local food products as well as the exquisite local wines and an indulgent grape seed massage and spa in the wellness area of your exclusive accommodation.

Enjoy a wine itinerary immersed in the beautiful late medieval architecture of Umbria's hilltowns and the evocative patchwork landscape of olive groves, wheat fields and vineyards.

You will stay in luxury accommodation at Palazzo Bontadosi with spa in the main piazza of Montefalco, one of Umbria's most beautiful hilltowns.

Meal vouchers will allow you select a different restaurant each night in the town with specially arranged menus matched to local wines. The restaurants range through the hotel's own exclusive restaurant to an excellent local chef nearby in the piazza and at Villa Pambuffetti with their enormous gardens just outside the town walls. There is also a trattoria and a pizzeria in the main street so you can choose from the full range of Montefalco's very local and traditional food offerings.

At a time that suits you on the itinerary you can select to have your included grape seed massage at Bontadosi followed by an hour exclusively yours in their beautiful spa with crystal lined pool.

You will be met outside the main entrance of Foligno railway station at 11.00 am and transferred to medieval hilltop town of Montefalco. During lunch at a fabulous family restaurant with, in our opinion, Umbria's best chef.

In the afternoon there is an introductory walk around the town which includes visits to some of the towns gorgeous linen shops - a traditional artisan feature of Montefalco, and a tasting at the Pardi wine cellar just outside of the historical centre. We also take a peek at the now famous frescoes by Benozzo Gozzoli painted in 1450 and where there is evidence of a robust red wine on the tables of a feast.

You will be introduced to the principal range of the area's wines over  in the town's delightful piazza. Followed by dinner in the piazza.

Day 2     Monday             Fongoli  & Antonelli Cellars                                  B L D

We begin with two of the regions' most prestigious wine makers,  The Fongoli family are one of the original family wine makers of the area and their history is reflected in the beautiful small cellar, one of the most evocative in the area, with a labyrinthine series of small to medium rooms under the family residence stocked with barrels and bottles. After a wine tasting and lunch on their shady terrace, we move next door to the up market Antonelli estate an historical provider to the Vatican of holy wine. After our tasting we are invited to wander through the private forest beside the vineyards, along trails lined with ancient oaks. Transport back immediately if required
Optional walk: Leaving Montefalco on foot if you prefer to walk through olive groves, vineyards and oak forests along country back roads  Walking Time. 2hrs morning. Optional return walk, 2 hrs afternoon. Transport provided for all non walkers.

Day 3     Tuesday               Caprai, Bevagna & Spello                                    B L D

Down in the valley and just a short distance from Montefalco, Bevagna is one of Umbria's most evocative towns. We stop on the way to visit the prestigious Caprai cellars one of the areas major award winners. Originally Roman, Bevagna has a beautifully evocative piazza encircled by three churches and containing roman ruins. We have lunch in a characteristic small restaurant in the town.

In the afternoon we travel to the delightful small hilltown of Spello and include a wine tasting in a well known cantina and a glimpse of the superb frescoes by the Umbrian Renaissance master Pinturicchio. Free time in the town to explore the ancient roman backstreets and modern art shops.
