Umbria is a dream landscape of serene valleys and fortified hill towns, vineyards and olive groves, in a setting of unsurpassed beauty nestling at the heart of the Italian peninsula. The itinerary takes you on guided walks through a landscape of extraordinary and uncontaminated beauty, of softly undulating mountains, following ancient trails laid by hermits, saints, peasants and pilgrims. Visit celebrated Medieval and Roman towns which retain the hauntingly primeval qualities of their past, and provide intriguing glimpses of the ancient world. Days are spent high in the Apennine mountains, or simply immersed in the unsurpassed beauty of patterned fields and hilltop towns that give Umbria its characteristic charm.

You will be staying at a family run country guesthouse located just outside the walls of the medieval hilltown of Montefalco, where a cluster of farm buildings has been converted into high quality accommodation. All rooms are furnished with solid antiques and have their own bathroom and private entrances. There is a shady garden with a swimming pool and spectacular views across the Valley of Umbria. The estate still produces their own vegetables, herbs, wine and olive oil which are used to prepare the delicious simple meals held in a pleasant dining room or outside under pine trees.

This is a preliminary itinerary and will be altered to accommodate seasonal activities, the weather and variable accessibility of the trails during some seasons, local festivals or the availability of guides or restaurants. What kinds of people go on Living Italy tours?
The single feature which distinguishes the Living Italy groups is their desire to understand and appreciate in depth the places they visit. The interests of the group are usually wide-ranging - history, fine arts, music, architecture, food, reading etc. The age of group members varies greatly, but most would be more than forty years old and have travelled. With a maximum of 18 places on the tour the group is large enough for you to find like-minded friends, but small enough for us to get to know you all.

What will the weather be like?

Each season has its own character:

Winter; November to January
Cool and crisp with clear blue usually sunny skies. Perfect walking weather in a landscape of patchwork fields set amongst medieval hilltowns. Scenic olive picking in November. It could snow in December

Spring; March, April & May
March & April are still fresh and there can be frosts, but it can also be bright and sunny. Walk past lacy white fields of heliotrope in March & poppies in May

Early Summer & Autumn; June,  September , October
June can be quite warm but the landscape is fantastic with dramatic sunflowers in the fields. July and August are to be avoided at all costs as the heat is extreme.  Watch the grape harvest in September. See October's golden autumn landscape with rich colours against the ancient stone towns.

How fit do you have to be? In order to visit and enjoy the natural attractions of the countryside and the historical centres of towns it is necessary to be able to walk for periods up to five hours. While there are no medical restrictions on who may book a place on the tour, you should have prepared well in advance with extended walks on a regular basis, and you should specially note that the towns are not called 'hilltowns' for nothing!. Wherever possible we have tried to mix uphill and downhill days in the itinerary to exercise different muscles. Remember that it is always possible to take time off from the program whenever you like.
